The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled Austin Meadows earlier today and he will join the club tonight at PNC Park against the San Diego Padres. Meadows was the Pirates’ #2 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and the #42 overall prospect in MLB. He’ll get the opportunity to make his Major League this weekend in front of the home fans thank to a right oblique injury that sent Starling Marte to the 10-day disabled list.
Pirates fans have been excited about his potential ever since he was drafted 9th overall in the 2013 MLB Draft. Ever since then, there have been whispers that he would replace Andrew McCutchen eventually once McCutchen became too expensive for the team to hold onto.
That day has arrived. The Pirates are playing great baseball right now and the addition of Austin Meadows could provide a little extra pop in the lineup, even with the loss of Marte for a few days.
Meadows has plenty of cardboard options to consider since he is a Team USA Baseball member prior to being drafted in 2013. The first cards of Austin in a Buccos uniform appear in several 2013 sets including Bowman Draft and Bowman Sterling.
