1991, the National Football League owners voted to add two teams to the league to begin play in the 1994 season. While predicting a 1994 start date may have been premature, the NFL awarded the two expansion teams to the cities of Jacksonville, Florida and Charlotte, North Carolina. These two new franchises, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Carolina Panthers, would actually begin play in the league in the 1995 season.
These were the first logomarks used by each team:
The 1995 NFL Draft saw each team select their first-ever draft picks with the Jaguars selecting Tony Boselli second overall and the Panthers selecting Kerry Collins fifth overall. Boselli had a very productive career as a five-time Pro Bowl selection and being named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team. Collins, although he had a respectable NFL, was not quite the ‘franchise quarterback’ the team was hoping for and did not finish the 1998 season in Carolina.
